Melanie offers conflict resolution facilitation for community groups, having learned these skills working with non-violent communication practitioners, a group called National Coalition Building Institute, and other mentors. She has worked as a mediator with non-profit groups struggling with internal conflicts, and as a facilitator for public events where there were tensions between groups. Most recently she facilitated at a conference organized by the Lost Valley Education Center bringing together folks from the permaculture and the native plants perspectives. Here is an excerpt from a thank you letter she received after that gathering:
Just a quick note to thank you for your work at the conference. I have to say that I came away amazed and impressed. You did an incredible job, and I for one, came away changed. I feel as if some unknown small, tight knot in my heart has unraveled. I learned a hell of a lot.
Your techniques were well-conceived and effective. It was very interesting to me to have my own views re-conceptualized, as much of my own work is helping others to re-conceptualize their views against the "enemy species" they are fighting. How interesting to find my own enemies brought into a more accurate, and more compassionate focus.
