Rainwater Swale

Green Building   As more land is used for buildings and surrounding areas are hard-landscaped, e.g. pavements and car parks, there is less opportunity for rainwater to infiltrate into the soil and thus return naturally to the water cycle. This means that all runoff has to be dealt with by conventional drainage systems that are not always capable of removing the levels of wastewater that presently occur.

Rainwater from many buildings goes to a meandering rainwater swale where it will then soak back into the ground instead of going to the street where it would mix with petroleum residues and become a toxic waste problem. The rainwater swale is a constructed ecosystem creating habitat for various species once more common to this location.
