Straw Bale Community Space
Pioneered in Nebraska after the turn of the century, Straw Bale construction enjoyed a revival in the late 80's and early 90's. Many hundreds straw bale houses have now been built around the country and the world. Straw bale houses range from over-sized, over-priced houses still containing many environmentally undesirable building materials to fiercely green structures using many recycled and natural materials. Prices can easily range from $25/sq. foot to $125/sq. foot. So the true environmental worthiness of a straw bale house varies dramatically depending on the ideology and budget of the designer builder.
The main environmental benefit of straw bale construction is that one achieves a very high insulation value using straw - an agricultural waste product. Other environmental benefits (if any) come as a matter of choice by the designer/builders.

The Straw Bale home at Maitreya EcoVillage is available as a community gathering space to all in the community. If you are interested in reserving the space, please contact Daniel at 541-968-9332.
